Halloween 2014 Teaser

Well it's almost that time of year again! Every year, Mo and I work together to write and create a personal haunted house experience for Halloween down in New Zealand. For each of these events, we release a teaser sneak peek, and then a final trailer which acts as an invitation to the guests to come join in on the scares!

Our teaser has now been released, take a look to check out the theme for this year! If you wanna check out last year's teaser and trailer, you can find them here.

Mad Kudu Character Sketch

We've started a fun way to practice some creature design. Initially it was meant to just be animal studies. But the challenge came in when trying to give the study some kind of character design (an emotion/personality). This was a fun way to practice, and this is my first attempt at it. I'll definitely be doing some more in the near future!

This is a study of a Kudu, an antelope indegenous in my home country, South Africa. They are pretty grand animals... So I turned mine into a mean looking alpha male :)

Skull Studies

Due to being rusty at a lot of illustration techniques and the intense need to learn how to draw monsters one day, I thought it a good idea to start with some skull studies. Building up a library of shapes for me to grab onto when I attempt a bigger project in the future. This is my first batch. At the moment they're only front and side views. In my next batch I'll attempt some 3quarter views :)

Summer Mechs

I was approached to design the album art for rainstormer.net, a new trip-hop, experimental hip-hop collective. Liking the winter mechs I had previously made, I was asked to create the same thing within a more summery situation. I gave two options, using my old mech. Check them out here:

UPDATE: Looks like the album releases tomorrow (5th August 2014). This is how the final turned out:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

If you ever wondered why I've been scarce lately, this would be the reason.
I have had the wonderful privilege of working with some of the most talented artists in the world on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, including some of the artists mentioned on this blog. It's been hard work, and it's nearing the end, but I have got to say I've had so much fun working on it.
It looks like it's going to be a good one so take a chance to check out the trailer if you can!

I was lucky enough to get 2 trailer shots for this (my very first trailer shots!!)

Hope you enjoy!

Portrait of Tiana

Just to practice faces (in 3 quarters of all things!!), I drew a picture of a friend of mine.

Her picture I referenced from :)

Mechs 2.0

Mo and I took a second bash at creating even bigger and better mechs.
Once again, using various model kits from tanks, to planes, to motorcycles and ships, we managed to bash all the pieces together to create an orginal design.

Taking it a step further, we shopped them into moody backgrounds to bring them to life... Hope  you enjoy :)

Mo also did a super cool mech along with mine... here are some sneak peaks into the awesomeness he created. If you'd like to see more of it (including his photoshopped images), you can see them here.

If you'd like to see more, both these mechs are also featured on the site Nuthin' but Mech. And if you'd like to see ALL the photos not featured on the site for more detail, you can see them here.

Thanks for checking this out! :)
